I love to watch the ferries, cruise ships, cargo ships and sail boats as I work on new designs. As I knit I marvel at the activity taking place on the water every day. While New York City hustles and bustles, so do its waterways, almost like a city unto themselves. I was inspired to design this hat as I thought about the people who work on the water through all seasons. Winter winds are biting here, so a warm hat is critical. Ferry in the Harbor is the sort of hat that would suit the needs of these sailors very nicely. Stranded colorwork creates an extra layer of warmth to block out those winds. The colors that I used for the design were inspired by the grey of the harbor on a cold day, and the bright orange Staten Island Ferry as it makes its frequent trips.

Size
To fit adults with heads measuring up to 60 cm/23.5”.
Finished circumference: 42 cm/16.5” at brim, unstretched.
Depth from brim to crown: 26 cm/10.25”.

Yarn
1 skein each in 2 colors of Tyrrell DK by Martin’s Lab (100% superwash Polwarth; 225m/246y per 100g).
Shown in colorways Autumn in Poland, MC; and Tabby, CC.

Needles
4 mm/US #6 or size needed for gauge; circular needle (40 cm/16” long) and one set of dpns.
3.75 mm/US #5 or one size smaller than gauge needles; circular needle (40 cm/16” long).

Other
1 stitch marker, tapestry needle, optional
pompom maker.

Gauge
23 sts and 27 rnds = 10 cm/4” in body pattern worked in the rnd, after blocking, unstretched.
Take time to save time – check your gauge.
